Fashion Fridays: A Look Back at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week... Decoy Dissections

Longtime fans of "Project Runway" know that the art of the decoy collections can often surpass that of the actual finalists. This past season was no exception. Here are a few of my favourites:

From the bespectacled, bowtie-loving, New Orleans native, Anthony Ryan:

From the curmudgeon-turned-sweetheart, Bert:

(I don't particularly care for the above piece in camel, as shown, but I would LOVE one in black, another in orange, one in red (sequined, perhaps?), and one in the most powerful neon green.)

From the mind of sad, Gaga-loving Bryce:

(I really, REALLY love this look, and think it was styled PERFECTLY. It brings equal parts Lucy Liu and Eliza Dushku.)

The beige-loving, bland-tasting, Madge-accented Olivier had this to show for himself:

And because we were taught by the Queen, Vanessa Williams, we've saved the best for last. Laura Kathleen was truly robbed of this moment of glory. No doubt her collection was the strongest, most cohesive, and most aesthetically pleasing. Beautiful... Enjoy:

Amy Winehouse - Rest in Peace.

News broke yesterday that one of Britain's most talented exports had passed away at the age of 27. Reaction ranged from shock and awe to disgust over the public's sadness at the loss of this incredible songstress. While it's true that Winehouse suffered through substance abuse issues, it cannot be refuted that the passing of such an amazing powerhouse leaves an empty void upon the musical landscape, one that is not set to be filled for quite some time.

Winehouse burst onto the collective consciousness of the world in 2006, following the release of her critically acclaimed "Back to Black," though she'd been a favourite of British critics since her stellar debut, "Frank." Extremely talented though she may have been, personal issues dogged her throughout her short-lived career. Winehouse had been in and out of rehab numerous times in recent years, and even cancelled her tour following a less than perfect stage performance in Belgrade.

Her final projects included a brief collaboration with frequent contributor and close friend, Mark Ronson, as well as the forth-coming "Duets II," with Grammy award winning singer, Tony Bennett.

The musical landscape will be a much more bland place following the loss of this iconic young woman, though whereever she is, she's surely rocking those Fuck Me Pumps harder than anyone else ever has.

Rest in Peace.

Fantastik Fridays - Rue McClanahan, Rest in Peace.

Sad news broke early yesterday, when the world learned that iconic comedy starlet Rue McClanahan passed away following a massive stroke. In remembrance of Ms. McClanahan, we here at SpastikFantastik blog have decided to dedicate this edition of "Fantastik Fridays" to her memory.

Rue was best known as Blanche Devereaux, the sassy and sultry star of one of television's golden sitcoms, "The Golden Girls." She appeared everywhere from "Mama's Family" to "Sordid Lives: The Series," where she played a devout Southern matriarch, with a salacious secret.

McClanahan was an icon in the gay community, and beloved by the world over. I suppose it just seems fitting that her passing would happen during Pride Month. Might I suggest that in her honour we make June third "Rue McClanahan Day," and that rather than it being a threat or an ominous warning, "Rue the day" come to be a celebration of life, and of the life of a wonderful, funny, gracious woman.

Rue McClanahan, Rest in Peace. You'll be missed.

Hello darling readers, and welcome back to SpastikFantastik's occasional feature, Sexy Saturdays. I've been a bit behind lately, so this update will not only be quite short (and scattered), but will also be combined with our Book and Album of the Month suggestions.

To start things off, our Album of the Month selection is The Orange Mountain Music Philip Glass Sampler Vol.I. It is a genuinely interesting look at Classical and Operatic movie scores, and is free for the time being. I encourage you all to give it a shot, not only was it a great listen, it is probably one of the best samplers I've ever listened to.

May's Book Feature will be devoted to Claire Zulkey's Girls! Girls! Girls!, a fecking Fantastik look at the inner working of one of my absolute favourite writers. It is a short story // essay collection, which is an unfortunately short read, but more than worth the cost and wait for delivery. Here's to hoping we see it back in print and soon!

And now back to our semi-regular, not-quite scheduled feature.....

RIP Lena Horne

News came to me early this morning that an amazing Jazz singer I'd admired had passed away. That singer was Lena Horne, best known for her smoldering rendition of "Stormy Weather."

Horne's personal life may not have been anywhere near as tragic as that of Billie Holiday, or as romanticized as that of Grace Kelly, but it heavily influenced the direction her career took in the last years of her life.

She had all but disappeared during the past decade, hurt by her experiences and her willingness to trust people she really shouldn't have. That said, she allowed biographer James Gavin into her life long enough to collect the seeds of "Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne," which is not only the last biography I read, but also the best I'd read in a long time.

While Horne's politics may have occasionally veered a little too radically for me (and that's saying a lot), there is no doubting the prowess of her voice or the humility she showed late in life.

The world will surely miss this icon. Lena Horne, Rest in Peace.

RIP - Lynn Redgrave

As many of you undoubtedly know by now, Broadway performer and cinema starlet Lynn Redgrave passed away Sunday at the age of 67 of complications stemming from breast cancer. While not nearly as prolific as her elder sister, Vanessa, Lynn was still a treasured stage icon, and will be missed dearly.

Below is a clip of Ms. Redgrave wishing the audience a fond farewell at the end of "The Muppet Show."

A Letter from the Editor.

It's been awhile since we've updated here at SpastikFantastik blog, so in honour of the last day of April I've decided to take it upon myself to bring you a little fabulous.

We've undergone a few editorial changes, the biggest being we are no longer covering top reality shows such as "RuPaul's Drag Race" or "Project Runway." Instead, SpastikFantastik blog will keep you updated on the latest bits of scandal, beauty and intrigue. We've also decided to cut down "Finola for President" from a weekly column, to one that will run the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. Look for next month's "Featured Artist" and book selection to be up within the next few days.

Now to resume our regularly scheduled blogging.

RuPaul's Drag Race
Season Two, Episode Four
"The Snatch Game"

We started off our foray into Dragland with a bit of an argument over whether or not to pity, sympathize with, or detest the recently departed Mystique Summers Madison. After a week off, this drama was much needed and greatly appreciated.
Tatiana again made a play for the "Nice, Sweet" card, as she defended the guileless Madison, and again attacked the character of the semi-bitchy Morgan McMichaels. It's almost bordering on becoming tiring.
So, our pre-challenge this week was "The QUEEN is Right!" a parody of the Bob Barker // Drew Carey classic. Top prize included a fabulous (and pricey) human hair wig, some pepper spray, and a phone call home. Sonique, Jessica Wild, and Raven made it all the way to the final round, where Miss Raven won it all. Her phone call home was quite entertaining - I know a certain woman very much like that.
On a related note: Damn, Jujubee has a HOT boyfriend!!!
Main challenge was "Snatch Game," where the ladies had to bring their best (and most entertaining) celebrity impersonations. How I would have LOVED and KILLED to be in this challenge!!!
I loved the sound effects used for Tatiana's Britney hair-flip/head toss - way to go, producers!

For "Snatch Game," the contestants were Phoebe Price and Alec Mapa, how cute!

The panel included:
Carol Channing
P!nk
Kimora Lee (no-longer) Simmons
RuPaul
Paris Hilton
Whitney Houston
Britney Spears
and Sasha Fierce, nee Beyonce.

Pandora Boxx's Carol Channing and Tatiana's Britney were easily the best, with Sahara Davenport's crackhead Whitney Houston and Jujubee's Kimora coming in a close second. Also receiving honorable mention were Tyra Sanchez's Beyonce, who got funnier steadily, and Jessica Wild, who was entertaining as Rupaul. Raven's Paris Hilton wasn't that great, and Morgan's P!nk was kind of.... not there. That said, Sonique's fate was even worse, as her Lady Gaga was quite forgettable.

On to the RUNWAY!!!
Special guest judges were the fabulous Miss Niecy Nash ("who wants a clean house?!") and that evil Billie, herself, Lisa Rinna.

Pandora Boxx look positively ravishing in her floor-length silver covered gown. She has never looked better!
Tyra looked very nouveau Cruella-meets-Parisian socialite. Red is not only my, but also her, colour.
Morgan channeled the local Carnival's main ring, as she strutted down that catwalk in a little one piece. It wasn't great, but not horrible.
Jujubee's pantsuit was cute, but I really didn't care for the wig (side-note: anyone else having fun playing "Spot the Wig" using the wigs from Dragulator and comparing them to those the ladies are sporting?)
Sonique was gorgeous as the Leopard Lady. Meow! I want more.
Tatiana's skirt seemed to fear her knees, as it certainly wanted no part in being anywhere near them. That said, I enjoyed the hair.
Jessica Wild looked very..... I can't place the reference, but I KNOW it's there.
Raven looked like she may have been inspired by Pandora's look from two weeks past, but taking that look a step higher with a flashy red lining, and a high slit (are there any other kinds?!)
Sahara Davenport looked very pretty in that black dress, but I'm not sure it was a showstopper...

The winner of this round was Tatiana, leaving Pandora Boxx to take second best.
The lip syncing ladies were Miss Sonique and Morgan McMichaels, and they (of course!) got to bring their best "Two of Hearts." Both ladies were extremely entertaining, and it would be Morgan staying, and that Atlanta girl, Sonique, sashaying away.

I loved RuPaul's hair during the runway, and her tricoloured dress was quite amazing.
I kind of wanted more from Niecy Nash, but what can you expect from a guest judge, and I think Lisa Rinna so despised Sonique's cat-mask because she wanted to be the only one in animal print.... by that logic, perhaps Santino always hates on Pandora's outfits because he wants to see her naked? He's not the only one...

Damn this Logo television network..... they pushed back "UnTucked," AGAIN! Revolt! Protest! Gay-anarchy! Still, I can't wait for the next episode!

To Make Them Feel Special... -- or -- It's Gonna Be CLOWN Clothes.

Season Seven, Episode
"A Little Bit of Fashion."

What a fitting title, as this show has drifted further and further from its fashion pheonomenon roots. However, I am always a fan of the children challenges, so I say BRING IT ON and MAKE IT WORK!

You know.... some of those dressforms with the flat chests look very much like the models on the catwalks in Paris, Milan, and Tokyo.

"I'm designing a pretty little dress." Oh Emilio... don't you listen?! You are never supposed to lose yourself in a challenge.

"If I was a little girl, I wouldn't mind green." Oh Anthony.... if you were a little girl, you would mix Hannah Montana with Betsey Johnson colour clash!

Really Mila, you really enjoy colour blocking? I don't think anyone would guess that.

Oh! Houndstooth fabric! I LOVE houndstooth fabric!!!!

So the designers have to make a corresponding, not matching, outfit for their Muse Models.... this is an intresting, if not entirely predictable twist. Let's see how many of the designers don't get that it's not supposed to be a carbon copy!

Damn! That Asian Guy's legs are fierce! He is rocking those shorts....

What's with Jesse having his shirt unbuttoned? Is he trying to be suave and sexy?

Yay! The designers are actually interacting! What an idea! Yay for them betting Anthony to shut up so they could play around.

Aww, Poor Janeane hates Halloween... could it be she was a sad Charlie Brown ghost as a child?

I like Jesse's little swish bang, it's cute, but maybe it's just because I have one, too.

I would love to have seen Ping's outfit(s) for this challenge! I bet they would have been great! Gagalicious to the extreme!

"We have until 10:30.... right?" Never a good thing to hear from a contestant on any show, especially this one.

"Your older sister is your dog?" Poor Anthony.

"This has been my strategy all along...." Sure FHG, whatever you say. I'm sure had you won earlier in the season, you would have thrown your fists in the air and shouted "Nay! For shame! This was never my plan - you were to UNDERestimate, and forget, about me!"

~~ [I'm kind of enjoying these Sears commercial... First a raccoon, and now dog food? What next, another lady-falling-in-the-toilet? If so, bring it on!] ~~

A show where judges critique models? What a GREAT idea! Oh, I know what you're thinking, it needs a "high-profile" host.... Hmm.... well, Naomi is too prone to phone tossing, what about - I got it! What's that talk show host -- Tyra Banks?

I love watching the pairs of models walking down the runway... they should ALWAYS do twin outfits. But wait, what's that white paper or fabric on the runway? What fell of of whose garments?

Bravo, indeed! Finally an episode that (almost) made me forget we weren't still on Bravo. Way to go - could we finally be getting our beloved Runway back???

Who is this American-sophisticate version of Heidi Klum? I kind of like her. I like that blase air of her voice, and she reminds me of someone.... Gosh hell, I can't think of whom.

I like the way Jesse is dressed on the runway. He accessorized well. Cute.

Top Three/Bottom Three not super surprising, though I didn't care for a certain someone's pink Sears Easter dress, but he was safe...

Not surprised with our eliminated designer. I understand the criticisms leveled against the outfit(s), and they weren't unfounded. Better luck next time around?

Next week we get a hardware store challenge! Sheet metal, nuts, bolts, screws! It's a dykey smorgasbord! Whoo hoo! Can't wait.

Shortening in Your Crotch? (!)

Rupaul's Drag Race
Season 2, Episode 3
"Country Queens."

Once again the week went by slowly without a new episode of RuPaul, though the numerous reruns of previous shows helped those of us at SpastikFantastik to bide the time. This week's introductory challenge had our favourite (and not-so favourite) queens in a "Fear Factor"/"Survivor" food guessing game, where the ladies had to down some nasty fried animal parts and correctly guess their origins. Winning this challenge were Mystique Summers Madison and Morgan McMichaels, who threw up after tasting some yummy cow brains, but pulled it together in the end, beating Pandora Boxx. (Who would have thought two of the skinniest girls would have had to go head-to-head on an eating challenge?)
As winners, Mystique and Morgan were team captains, and the breakdown goes as follows:
Team Mystique consisted of Pandora, Jujubee, Tatiana, and Miss Jessica Wild.
Team Morgan had Raven (no surprise there), Sahara Davenport, Sonique, and Miss Tyra Sanchez, who appears to have almost forfeited her bitch crown (at least for this week).
The main challenge this week was to memorize, accessorize, and shoot a commercial for Disco Extra Greasy Shortening, using a script for either fish fillets or fried chicken.
Both teams pulled through, though Team Morgan appears to have had the weaker commercial. Raven was singled out for her confusion over the direction to take her character (a Disco chicken), Tyra for the fact that she never changes the tone and pitch of her voice, and Pandora for her more relaxed fashion style.
Poor Raven didn't understand she was supposed to play a chicken, not just a woman dressed up as one, and Sonique looked like she could have passed for the twin sister of either "Bad Girls"'s Yvonne Atkins or "Sordid Lives: The Series"'s Olivia Newton John!
Jessica Wild appears to have been the winner for the commercial alone, after overcoming her language barrier and fully absorbing the character of Disco Chicken.

On the runway the ladies were asked to bring their country realness, and honey they worked it!

Sonique rocked out in her Coyote Ugly best, looking very fit and fish.
Jujubee made a cute Asian rancher, in that red-n-white top tied above her waist.
Raven was positively gorgeous! She wins best look of the week, for her beautiful blonde tresses, cute denim shorts, and popping cherry red lipstick. She looked almost Lucille Ball-like, wish a hearty dash of Lana Turner thrown in for good measure.
Sahara do-si-doed her way into the judges heart (and looked cute doing it), decked out in her best exotic Dorothy Gale.
Tatiana attempted ghetto-hick, and reminded me of Julia Stiles trying to do "street" in "Save the Last Dance."
Pandora did tweeny-Montana, and was chided for it (though maybe it was just for the lack of flair on her top, as opposed to her pants?)
Jessica Wild looked very Cordelia Chase, with her long brown locks, cowgirl hat, cinched waist, and apple-bottom jeans (no boots with da furs, though).
Mystique spun and spun her way into the bottom two, both for her inability to take direction, and her Star Jones/Walmart day-to-day look. She would lose the lip sync to Miss Raven, whose performance was the more lively of the two.
Morgan McMichaels, who decided that just because you're going country doesn't mean you have to be podunk, wore an upscale black jacket and sequined boots combo. Very Wynonna-meets-Ashley-Judd on the red carpet.
Tyra's look was much improved over last week, but maybe it was just her keeping her bitchiness to herself, and the big hair that made me enjoy her so much more? She went on to win the crown for the week.

Kathy Najimy and Tanya Tucker were this week's guest judges, and they seem to have been up to the task. Najimy started off seeming a little off and mean-spirited, but by the time the runway rolled around she appeared to have been back to her jovial, Mary Sanderson/"Gameshow Marathon"-winner we know and love.
Tanya Tucker must have happy to be there, and happy to be back in the cultural lexicon after having been out of the spotlight so long.

I wasn't pleased with Logo's decision to push back "UnTucked" to 10:30, though perhaps it was due to Olympics coverage? If it was only to try to force viewers to sit through "The Robert Verdi Show," then they're smart for their placement, but wicked. I've watched that premiere episode at least a half dozen times, and didn't really need or want to see it again - bring on the QUEENS!!!

"Run for Cover"

Tonight's challenge, touted as on of the biggest, most amazing challenges ever, didn't seem all that inspired. Win the challenge and get your look published on "Marie Claire" magazine.... It's not like it was "Vogue," or something.
Poor Mila, she feels people don't respect her or congratulate her enough.... Maybe they think she a Laura Bennet knockoff?
"Welcome to our building; this is where our office is." - really? I thought your office was at the Starbucks on the corner. Thanks for letting me know I was wrong.
I'm really not feeling all the haterade being aimed at FED Seth Aaron.... it almost makes me find him to be an endearing character.
Oh no! The magenta is looking FUCHSIA! What ever shall we do!?
Poor Janeane, she's going bridal, and Janeane does NOT do bridal! This is not "Bride Wars," is is "Project Runway." Get it together, girl, get it together!

Oh, how I love when people say "I'm here to win." It's as though they assumed we thought they were there to go home empty handed. Because that makes a lot of sense, right?

Poor Janeane (which is her official name, Poor Janeane), I wonder how many times a day she thinks to herself "If I could just go back and start over, I would go in a completely different direction"? Does she sit at home, knitting booties for the old folks' home and say "If only I could go back, I wouldn't have tried to attempt an argyle pattern with little pink kitty-cats. Darn."?

Let me say that I've discovered that when the contestants lose their "schtick," it throws the entire equilibrium of the episode off. FHG lost his pushed up hairdo, and I found it distracting. FBG Anthony lost the puffy pirate shirts (pps), and that deeply saddened me, even though I absolutely hate them. Also, that Hot Topic FED didn't wear red velvet pants, but instead VERY skinny jeans.... I don't know how I feel about that.
Ohmigosh! FBG Anthony dressed his model in a lady dress version of his favourite puffy pirate shirts!!!
Really, Aunty Viv//Laura Bennett? Is there a difference between peach and beige?
So Poor Janeane decided to call her stuff "waves".... like PPG from seasons past, Leanne?
"It looked much peachier when it was in my hands" - Laura Bennett, you are not. If looks could kill, Michael Kors would have shot you down!
The Top Three seemed to actually be deserving, this time around. Let's hope this new found common (and fashion) sense sticks around for the remainder of the season.

All in all, this episode wasn't bad.... HUGE improvement over last week's episode.
Yay! The children challenge is next week.... let's hope 'roid ragin' Jesse doesn't get mad and punch at the kids, instead of just the air!

Side Note: Does anyone else think all these scissor mentions in the opening sequence seem eerily similar to those in Shear Genius?

Alexander McQueen: Rest in Peace

As many of you undoubtedly know, English fashion zeitgeist Alexander McQueen was discovered dead early this morning in his London flat, the victim of an apparent suicide. McQueen's death comes on the heels of his mother, Joyce McQueen's, death last week, and that of his close personal friend, Isabella Blow's, in late 2007.
The fashion world has truly lost an icon, and he will most certainly be missed.

RuPaul's Drag Race
Season Two, Episode Two
"Starbootylicious"

After a week that felt like an eternity, RuPaul's Drag Race returned for the second episode of its sophomore season. The wait was more than worth it.
Our lead-in involved having these queens revamp the already gorgeous (and MUCH coveted by this particular Queen) RuPaul fashion dolls in teams of two (and one in the case of Mystigue Summers Madison, but she's a big girl, so I guess she could count as two?). Team Pandora Boxx and Sahara Davenport won this round, and were rewarded by being team captains for the Cherry Pie! challenge.
Pandora selected Raven, Morgan McMichaels, Sonique, Tatiana, and (a surprising LAST "pick") Nicole Paige Brooks to be on her team, while Ms. Sahara Davenport chose Jujubee, Tyra Sanchez, Jessica Wild, and Mystique. After the gym class playground picks, the ladies were off to fight to the death for bolts of florescent fabric and sewing notions.
This week's challenge found our favourite ladies writhing up and down stripper poles, begging for cash, and attempting to sell Cherry Pie gift certificates on the streets of LA.
Team Sahara seemed destined to lose the main challenge, as major infighting erupted between team captain Davenport and new queen bitch, Tyra Sanchez, who made sure to take plenty of naps while her teammates glue gunned away. This, however, was not the case as Team Pandora Boxx lost, having had the weaker burlesque performances on the
pole, and earned FAR less cash money on the streets of Hollywood. Called out to be in the bottom "Lip Sync for Your Life" two were Raven and Nicole Paige Brooks, whose lackluster pole skills and demure stage presence sealed her fate.

On to the runway....
Sonique was looking fierce in her vintage WWII era costuming, but her street sass left the judges wanting more.
Jessica Wild was giving off Addams Family Values in that cute midnight frock and hat number, but maybe I've just been hitting the Charles Busch photo archives too hard lately....
Raven channeled Cher, and was the one that had the saddest (yet sexiest) face of the week. (If you'll recall, Sahara Davenport's ultralong lashes and demeanor had her playing the sorrowful one, last week)
Sahara's blue glitter dress and big wavy locks looked positively stunning. She won the challenge, and a $1500 gift certificate to sequinqueen.com.
Pandora Boxx wasn't amazing, but she wasn't all that bad either. I know that once she comes out of her shell she will be fucking FIERCE!
Jujubee's hair was amazing, and I loved her pink dress and runway boogie. She's gotta be one of my absolute favorites.
Nicole Paige Brooks was very fish, but also very plain compared to the other girls rocking that catwalk. Her blending in, and lack of money hustling on the streets, would prove to be her undoing - she would end up being the one eliminated.
Mystique Summers Madison was swaying and spinning as though there was a tornado running through Kansas - Dorothy, grab your dog and head for cover!
Morgan McMichaels looked like a drag queen secretary slash (not so) secret dominatrix.
Tyra was rocking a frizzy pompadour and looking VERY Rihanna (though Tatiana would later claim it was SHE evoking Rihanna).
Tatiana's makeup was gorgeous, and the purple satin gown perfectly complemented her skin tone, though I'm not sure I really liked her choice of hairpiece.

I absolutely loved Jujubee! Her solo burlesque performance was adorable, and on this week's UnTucked, she finally came up to the spotlight; she is fierce!
I love Kim Coles, and I love her even more sitting next to RuPaul; Dita VonTesse, eh... Take it or leave it, I guess.
Tyra wasn't forgettable this week, but that's not exactly a good thing. She seems to be a prissy, whiny bitch, and this runway is no place for someone like that. Bounce her, and soon!
For the most part, everybody's ultra glam looks were very gorgeous, but Sonique's stood out as my favourite of the week. She was working that 40's starlet look!
So, Nicole Paige Brooks AND Tyra both have babies? What is going on this year, is everyone a baby machine? RuPaul, look out! There may be something in the water.
I commented, last week, that I thought I would miss the old setting for RPDR, but I realized this week that I actually enjoy this new setup, and that it doesn't detract from the allure of the show.

Next Week's episode looks as good as this week's, which is quite promising, but it seems Tyra is going to continue playing the "I'm not a bitch" Bitch card, and I'm afraid she'll be able to ride it farther than she should (if only for ratings' sake).

"Design Your Heart Out"

"This is actually the largest challenge I have ever faced as a designer" - really?! Being in front of the cameras, with a budget handed to you, is the hardest thing!?

The most recent preview for tonight's episode was quite melodramatic.... I really don't care for this Lifetime movie drama streak!

You really want to show you're capable of designing "Macy's stuff"? Not your own, but Macy's?

Aww, the friend edit! "Such-and-such is my bestie! We are so close.... but they're [whispers] competition!"

The company known for condensed chicken soup is pushing couture, now? Oy! That is absolutely ridiculous!

Amy is already so emotional.... even though she is more monotonous than Daria Morgandorffer.

You've never "met anyone who has died and come back to life," but what about the opposite? Are you, like Tegan and Sara, walking with the ghost???

How I loathe when the designers decide to say their client is the "most amazing person.... her heart even BEATS!!!"

High blood pressure!? Seriously!!! That's the big deal?

What happens to the leftover money? Do the designers pocket it, or do the producers swoop back in and squawk "Gimme gimme gimme!" like an ABBA song?

But Valentine's Day is perfect! "When in Rome" just premiered, it's on Lifetime, and February 14th is right around the proverbial corner!

You're glad you didn't make the garment because the fitting proved you needed a fitting. Okay.

It's Curtains! - My thoughts on the premiere episode of RuPauls's Drag Race, Season 2

After letting it soak like so much foundation in a cheap makeup sponge overnight, and rewatching the numerous reairings while half-asleep, I am ready to share my opinion on "Gone With the Window," the second season opener for RuPaul's (excellent) Drag Race.
While I was initially skittish, and off put, by the inclusion of so many mean, evil bitches this season, I find that I am warming to them rapidly. The vixens that were selected may be vicious, but for the most part they BRING IT. The first challenge involved making a showstopping costume from window drapery panels, as well as discarded home "fashions." For the girls who couldn't sew - namely Shangela and, to a lesser extent, whiny Mystique (who doesn't live up to the X Men reference) - this made for inclusion in the Bottom Three.
The drama didn't really start to rev up until after the elimination, when the aforementioned Shangela was given the boot for a dress that looked like a castoff from this season's potatosack challenge on Project Runway, and the personality to match. On to the drama! It seems a certain queen (Tatiana) took offense to a few of the other girls talking some smack about the heavily lackluster (no pun entirely intended) Mystique, despite the fact that she stole the curtains right from the clutches of early favorite Morgan McMichaels, proving her to be the bigger bitch!
Drama continued when the zany Nicole Paige Brooks started to rub the other girls the wrong way, but this didn't go anywhere - yet. Back to Ms. McMichaels, it seems she'll take this season's "Bitch Crown" from early front runner for the title, Raven, who seems to just introduce scandal early on, then let it naturally taper off - love the lips, girl!
As stated earlier, most of the drama is saved for the companion show, "Untucked," which is fitting because it makes the finished product that much more professional. Perhaps the people over a Lifetime will take the hint and drop their model show, in favor of a clip show of that week's leftover drama? Maybe not, since so many of their contestants are so flat.
While I try to stray from letting my favorites known (since they tend to end up getting the boot early in Act Three when I do), I'll do it here:
I'm loving Pandora Boxx in AND out of drag. She is absolutely adorable! I love her Kathy Griffin getup, and her dark eyes/blonde hair combination.
Raven may be hard, but I suspect she's soft in all the right places. Honey, she's GORGEOUS! I can understand Ms. Brooks's seeming obsession with her.
On to Ms. Nicole Paige Brooks, who is quite attractive herself. I'm loving the weirdo/antagonist edit she's getting so far, here's to hoping the producers keep this up.
Sahara Davenport may have had to lipsynch for her life, but her long lashes were looking mighty fierce and casting a large shadow on that runway!
Morgan McMichaels may have started off as the victim of pilfered drapery panels, but she took what she had and served it up as the season's biggest bitch (thus far) and the eventual challenge winner. Maybe Tatiana should have swiped those window treatments instead?
Jujubee was looking flawless in her high collared couture look with featherwig (which Raven absolutely LOVED "It's so editorial!"), as well as diplomatic during the not-quite-as-tense-as-possible infighting backstage.
The Donatella Versace/Lady Gaga inspired ingenue, Jessica Wild, looked absolutely fabulous and showstopping in her fabric-flowered swimsuit. This girl could give Candis Cayne and Alexis Arquette a serious run for their money!
Lastly, Sonique (who borrows her name from one of my favourite dance music artists of the past 15 years) looks fierce in that short blonde wig, and brought it in all the right ways with her Sub-Saharan Africa/Masai warrior look. Look out for this girl, ladies.

On to the girls I'm not as impressed with....
Leading off the pack for this group is Tatiana, who looked nice, but a)swiped some curtains, which paints her as a conniving bitch, and started in on the Head Bitch, Morgan. Not nice or smart to try to overthrown the Queen B before she's started to roost!
Next we have Tyra, who wasn't at all horrible or wicked, but failed to leave an impression thus far (other than by having had a child since her senior year in high school). She's the one who slipped my mind, and was forgotten. Not a good trait for a drag queen to possess!
Shangela Laquifa Wadley was the first to go, and I have to admit I'm not saddened in the least by it. She wanted to play the inexperienced baby queen card, and that just doesn't fly with this viewer! Further, as mentioned earlier in this post, her dress left MUCH to be desired, and was very poorly made. Compared to Season One's first out, the lovely Victoria "PorkChop" Parker, Shangela's dressmaking skills are equivalent to duct taping a bolt of fabric to your bosom. Not cute.
Finally, we reach my least favourite queen of the season, the not-at-all regal Mystique Summers Madison, who did nothing more than whine about her plus size leaving her at a disadvantage compared to the other girls. Ooh, how I loathe whiny bitches, and she was no exception. Her dress was indeed raggedy, but at least an improvement compared to the "pillowcase" she appeared to have been making at the challenge's inception.

So, the workroom and the stage have been updated for this sequel season, but that's to be expected with the increased financing following last year's runaway success. I'll miss the aesthetic quality and lowrent appeal of the sets from the former series, but after a few episodes I'm sure I won't even notice anymore.
I'm a little disappointed to see the show's sponsors have shifted, but NYX is still a great makeup brand, if not as alluring as MAC, and we still have Absolut vodka and LA Eyeworks, so keep the drinks coming until I can't see straight anymore(not that I could all that well to being with)!
The judges included old staples Santino Rice and Merle Ginsberg, who both missed Ru very much since their stints as last season's primary judging panel, as well as the always adorable Kathy Griffin and Mike Ruiz, who came off much better this season. Last year, I felt like he was just this weird guy who wanted to try to touch my boy parts; this season, I feel like he's someone I WANT to touch my boy parts.
The Absolut bartender is so fucking gorgeous. I would be the drunkest bitch there, because I would not want to leave that barstool!
RuPaul looked wonderful, but that's to be expected. I don't think that mama drag queen has had a bad fashion (or hair day) in the last twenty years.
All in all, some of these bitches look like they can actually bring it, and I look forward to getting to know them more. I'll try to refrain from making too many comparisons to the Season One queens, who were far and away the better bunch, but I have a feeling that may be harder than it looks.
In closing, let me say one final thing about this season - it had better work!

Our featured artist is Nneka, a German-Nigerian hip hop songstress. She broke out onto the international music scene in 2004, following a gig as the opening act for Sean Paul, and has since made a name for herself while drawing comparisons to Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu.

"The Hi's and Low's of Fashion"

"To succeed in fashion, I really just need to be myself." Really, Jesus Christ Superstar? I would never have guessed that to succeed in FASHION you need to be yourself, but this is PROJECT RUNWAY, and it is something completely different.

Oh god - not the Met, not again, not already! I hate the MET challenges!!!! At least we get to see these crazy designers rip the shit out of each other...

Yes! Ping is a leader! But this could end badly...... Hahahaha, that semi-nondescript blond guy (SNBG) isn't happy to be with Ping, poor baby....

SHG is really bitchy about being with Aunt Vivian! Way to snark!

Ahh! SNBG is apparently angry and violent! I don't like that combination in a PR contestant!!!! Neither a sewing room, nor a fabric store are the place to take out your aggression! Lay of the steroids!

How dare you make Ping "doubt about [her] design"?! She is this season's WG!!!! Leave her alone, follow her lead, and if you're lucky YOU won't be going home.

It's always worrisome when one person (especially the team leader) decides to focus on only one garment, while the other person does several! I'm talking to you, Auntie Viv! Be CAREFUL!!!

Elimination - kind of sad, but not really surprised. Overall, this episode wasn't bad. Could Runway be back on track?

Next Week: SHG says it's a "fashion disaster of Chernobyl proportions" - uh... no. Tara Reid's boob popping out is a fashion disaster (and a tabloid sensation!), surely this cannot compare.

So tonight's big twist is burlap.... Yawn, much? There's nothing like listening to a bunch of bratty fashionistas complain about having to use an unsavory material.
Sneaky little Heidi, indeed. You never know what that crazy Germanic television host is up to................... On the other hand, we know what Seal's been up to.

The models get to choose, already? But they get to choose the designer they want? That's better.

With Ping's hood wrapped behind her ears, it looks like she belongs on a farm. She could play Icelandic peasant very well.

Hmmm.... It appears this season will be full of drama. We've had our first fight, and that 'Models of the Runway' commercial gave us our first taste of model drama. Perhaps we'll get another Morgan Quinn???

Some of that dyed burlap is seriously starting to look Welcome mat-ish.

Oh no, Edgy Asian Guy (EAG) ended up with NAVY - what a disaster!

Yes, Spiked Hair Homosexual (SHH), maybe it IS supposed to be an assflap.

Who would I like to see as a Guest Judge on Project Runway? Lady Gaga, of course. She would be all OVER that runway.

Once again, not totally surprised with the elimination. Still no broken heart for me.

Teams next week, and it looks like some of the designers are getting pretty damn close to throwing punches. Delightful!

Men's Fashion Week - Milan

While the models keep strutting down the runways of Milan, we here at SpastikFantastik have been keeping our eyes open for the new trends set to debut for Fall and Winter 2010.
Nothing could beat the hotness factor that came from watching an army of Dolce & Gabanna's fabulous muscular gods walking down the runway en masse, but the other contenders in Italy sure did try.

A running theme of slim cut trousers came through loud and clear during Versace's futuristic show. The Matrix-inspired clothing is sure to adorn the wardrobe of any ultra secret spies or amateur Van Helsings out there.

Another popular trend, layering of knits, could be seen in the Prada line.

Alexander McQueen went with what appears to be a paisley-stricken dystopia, somewhere in an alternate past, or the not too distant future. The models' faces covered, they looked ready to trawl the deserts of a post apocalyptic, fashion forward Earth.

The D&G show left a little to be desired, and was a bit confusing with multiple models on the runway simultaneously. They had a few chic pieces, though, and the folks at Dsquared more than made up for the monotany, with their bloodied street thug designs and gauche mock hockey wear.
Gucci's collection seemed to be the clear winner, with it's gorgeously tailored, retro 70s suiting

... until I saw these absolutley fabulous Burberry coats. Here's to hoping they come up with a vegan-friendly option by Fall.

So to wrap things up, well-fitted pants, layered kints, and a collection of high-end men's luggage are the key items to work into your wardobe by the time the leaves turn brown. Further, I'd be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to Donatella, who looked positively stunning after the Versace show. Work it, girl.

Taking a page from the Style Network's (former) playbook, we here at SpastikFantastik have decided to make every Tuesday "Finola Hughes Day." The London-born actress, best known for her role as Anna Devane on every soap of importance on the ABC network, is always the epitome of style and elegance. As such, it is our role as connoisseurs of the fabulous to honor Hughes accordingly.

Today's inaugural photo is of Ms. Hughes at the premiere of Earth in April of 2009. She sports a comfortable baby cut tee, a stylish pewter necklace, and gorgeous purple shades atop her always impeccable, well-highlighted locks.

Project Runway - Season Seven - Episode One

The first thought that springs to my mind, besides "thank GOD," is "Bullshit." You and I both know that even if it wasn't fun, you'd never give up *T*H*E*F*A*M*E*.

Were these designers really all that surprised to only have three minutes to grab fabric - has it ever been anything else? Did you really think you'd have all evening to peruse?

I'm not loving the choice of indie music played during Tim's monologue.

Holy v-necks. Stock market tip: Invest in American Apparel v-neck line.

Whoever is editing the show now needs to lay off the dramatic music a little. Every other scene has that.... BOOM BOOM POW. Even Fergie Ferg knows to lay off once in awhile.

I'm torn - these contestants seem to be trying way too hard, and there are way too many of them that fit this category.

I think Fake Evel Dick could really benefit from an official Evel Dick makeover.
I think Fat Black Guy (FBG) is probably going to be this year's Fat Black Girl - formerly Qristal, formerly Suede?
I think this year's Leanne is way too emotional way too soon, but maybe that'll help her out in the long run.
Lady Bangs looked like she was sporting a Kenley glare - quite fierce already, no?
Survivor's Corinne Kaplan is a designer now?
Is that Top Design's Andrea? Or Lonely Tourist Charlotte Charles's Aunt Vivian?

Oh my - FBG next to that tall model is just way too much of a height difference, head sizes, proportional, not quite!
That cocoa crocodile dress, if shorter, looked like it could have been in the "Say My Name" video.

You go, Nicole Richie, defend this season's Weird Girl (WG), formerly the Samantha Ronson/La Roux lookalike Ari Fish, formerly the tanlicious BLAYNE WALSH. I must admit, I was a little afraid when I heard you'd be judging, especially since you remind me of the recently deceased Brittany Murphy, but you made sense. You seem to have stuck to your guns. Good for you!

Not super surprised by who was eliminated, not much of a stirring for one person or the next yet. I'll say I tend to be drawn to the Plain Plaid Girl(s) (PPG), but even they haven't reeled me in yet.

Maybe it was just the increasingly hopeful and high expectations after last season's mega flop, but this season just doesn't quite seem to do it for me. If they don't hit their stride soon, I don't think Runway will be the cultural phenomenon it once was. Not a great way to start out the decade - I blame the Weinstein Co.

You'd Better Work....

So with my first official preview of Season 2 of RuPaul's Drag Race now over, I have to say my jitters over the new contestants are ebbing away. It appears we'll have a few interesting characters, but I find myself saying "Oh, that's supposed to be Shannel? And that's Ongina..."

We'll need to work on that.

So, while killing time and eating bluffin'-muffins I saw an interesting piece on Current. It seems that there is an intricate and extreme difference in the way that a man pushes his bicycle versus the way a woman does the same. I wish I could weigh in on this, but as an individual that *cannot* ride a bicycle to begin with, I fear I am unable to.

I wasn't going to post again so soon, but I find myself having to explain a few things. Point one:

I practise the delicate art of self-photography. To get the best shot possible, intricate posing is necessary. Occasionally, one may need to rely upon showing their best side. This is just the Bette Davis in me coming out.

Everyone's heard of the "myspace angle" being used to hide flaws. This is usually true, but not in my case, for I have no flaws. To glimpse upon me full frontal is to see god. I'm just protecting your corneas.

I look to the left, this is a fact. I also lean that way, and tend to dwell there. I'm a donkey, I suppose, and a lover of the ass and Beyonce. To the left, bitches, to the left.

Lastly, let me just say that it is fashion and I will always be fabulous. As a result of this, my pictures will be haute couture.
